Why a Considered Career Change Matters

Changing direction at work is rarely a single decision. For many people in the United Kingdom it follows a redundancy, a wish for a better work-life balance, rising living costs or the way automation and AI are reshaping their sector. Starting from a clear picture of your own interests, work styles and values makes each of those decisions easier to weigh, and it helps you avoid a move that looks good on paper but does not suit you.

Most career changers already hold more than they realise. Years of experience build transferable skills, such as managing people, solving problems and communicating clearly, that can count in a different field. A career change test helps you see which roles reward the strengths you already have. NexReach™ then shows career progression paths between related occupations, so a move can be a step sideways or up rather than a restart from the beginning.

NexReach™ is designed to sit alongside the free, impartial advice available from services such as the National Careers Service, not to replace it. It offers a structured, evidence-informed starting point: a profile built on established career-interest and personality research, matched to occupations in two international databases. The results are an exploration, not a verdict, and you can read more in our methodology.

Our Methodology

NexReach™ is built on established career-interest and personality research, including Work Adjustment Theory, Holland's RIASEC model and Allport's trait structure. It draws on two major occupation databases, O*NET (1,000+ roles) and ESCO (3,000+ roles), and is aligned with the EU GDPR. The NexPath team has worked on this technology since 2017. Results are offered as a useful starting point for exploration, not as a verdict. Please read the full methodology for details.

NexReach™ is an online career change test for working adults and career changers aged 18 and older in the United Kingdom. It takes about 15 minutes, and no account is required to start. It is built on established career-interest and personality research (Work Adjustment Theory, Holland's RIASEC model and Allport's trait structure) and links your interests, work styles and values to occupations from the O*NET and ESCO databases, together with career progression paths between related roles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is NexReach™, and who is it for?

NexReach™ is a career change test for working adults and career changers aged 18 and older. It is suited to anyone who is considering a new direction, returning to work, facing redundancy or simply wondering what else might suit them. It takes about 15 minutes. It looks at your interests, work styles and work values, and then suggests occupations that align with your profile.

Do I need an account to take the test?

No. You can start and complete the assessment without creating an account. Once you have finished, please create a free account so that your results are saved and you can open the full career report. The report includes your personality and career profile, your ranked career matches and your suggested next steps.

What research is the career change test based on?

NexReach™ is built on established career-interest and personality research. It draws on Work Adjustment Theory (Dawis and Lofquist, 1984), which looks at how well a person's needs and abilities fit a work environment, and on Holland's RIASEC model of six interest types (Holland, 1997). It also uses Allport's trait structure (Allport, 1937) as a basis for describing work styles. It measures six work values, 16 work styles and six RIASEC interest types. The NexPath team has worked on this technology since 2017. You can read a fuller explanation in our methodology.

How reliable are the results, and what are their limits?

The underlying theories have been studied for decades, and reviews of Holland's model have found considerable support for the six interest types and their ordering. However, we do not claim that NexReach™ itself is scientifically proven, and no independent study of this particular tool has yet been published. Researchers also note that RIASEC results can vary between countries and samples, and that no UK norms exist for this instrument yet. For these reasons, please treat your results as a useful starting point for exploration, not a verdict. We suggest discussing them with a qualified careers adviser, for example through the National Careers Service or a member of the Career Development Institute.

How does the test help if I want to change career with no relevant experience?

Your report matches your profile to occupations drawn from 3,039 ESCO occupations. It also shows career progression paths between related roles, which helps you spot realistic stepping stones rather than a leap from one field to another. Because the matching starts from your interests, work styles and values, it can point to roles where your existing, transferable strengths are likely to count. NexPlanner, marketplace services and other tools in your account are available to help you turn the results into a plan.

How is my personal data handled?

NexPath is aligned with the EU GDPR, and the team has worked on this technology since 2017. You can complete the assessment without an account.
