Why a considered career change matters

Australian employers increasingly look for adaptable people who can apply a mix of skills, and many adults are weighing a move into growth areas such as health, aged care, community services, IT, project management, engineering and construction. Changing direction is a big decision. Feeling unsure or tense about it is common, and it usually helps to start with evidence about yourself rather than a guess.

A good career change begins with understanding what you already bring. NexReach™ looks at your interests, work styles and work values together, using frameworks that include Work Adjustment Theory, Holland's RIASEC model and Allport's trait structure. It then matches your profile to real occupations and shows career progression paths between related roles, so you can see which of your existing strengths carry over. You can read the reasoning behind this in our methodology.

The goal is a practical shortlist, not a label. Your career report gives you occupations to explore, ideas about where your current experience could lead, and a starting point for deciding whether a short course, vocational training or university study makes sense. Whether you live in a capital city, a regional town or a remote community, you can then check your options against official sources such as Your Career.

Our Methodology

NexReach™ is built on established career-interest and personality research, including Work Adjustment Theory (Dawis & Lofquist), Holland's RIASEC model and Allport's trait structure. Your results are matched against two occupation databases, O*NET (1,000+ roles) and ESCO (3,000+ roles), and include career progression paths between related occupations. The platform is aligned with the EU GDPR, and the team has worked on this technology since 2017. You can read how the assessment works in our methodology.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the NexReach™ career change quiz for?

NexReach™ is designed for working adults and career changers aged 18 and older. It suits people who are considering a pivot, returning to work, feeling stuck in their current role, or planning to reskill. It is not designed for school students, who have a separate youth track. The assessment takes about 15 minutes.

What research is the assessment based on, and how scientifically sound is it?

NexReach™ is built on established career-interest and personality research. It draws on Work Adjustment Theory (Dawis & Lofquist, 1984), Holland's RIASEC model of vocational interests and Allport's trait structure. It assesses 6 work values, 16 work styles and 6 RIASEC interest types. NexReach™ is a career exploration tool and not a clinical or diagnostic test, and we do not claim that it has been through its own independent validation study. The methodology page sets out the frameworks, the data sources and the limits of what the results can tell you.

Is there research supporting these frameworks in Australia?

Yes, for the underlying frameworks. The O*NET research documentation cites Taylor, Kelso, Pretty and Power (1980) in support of Holland's circular model of interests in Australia. Australian researchers have worked with the model for decades, for example Athanasou's A Vocational Interest Survey (AVIS, 1986), the Australian Edition of the Self-Directed Search (Shears & Harvey-Beavis) and Harvey-Beavis (1994), who mapped Australian occupations to RIASEC types. Comparable interest instruments such as the O*NET Interest Profiler report internal reliabilities of about .78 to .87 (Rounds et al., 2010). Those figures describe other instruments, not NexReach™. We also do not claim Australian norm-referenced scoring, because free, publicly available instruments in this field do not have Australian norm tables. Please read your results as a prompt for exploration, not a verdict.

Do I need an account to take the assessment?

No. You can start and complete the assessment without creating an account. After you finish, you create a free account to save your results and unlock the full career report. From there you can explore your matches and use tools such as NexPlanner and marketplace services to act on your goals.

How do the career matches connect to Australian jobs and training?

Your matches come from two occupation databases: O*NET (1,000+ roles) and ESCO (3,000+ roles, including 3,039 occupations in the ranked list). NexReach™ also shows career progression paths between related occupations, so you can see how a role you know could lead to another. These databases are used for classification and mapping only. To check local details such as outlook and training options, you can compare your matches with official Australian sources like Your Career and the labour market insights from Jobs and Skills Australia. NexReach™ is an independent resource and is not endorsed by or affiliated with any of these organisations.

How is my personal information handled?

NexReach™ is aligned with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the team has worked on this technology since 2017. You only need to create an account after the assessment, when you choose to save your results. If you would like to understand more about how the assessment works before you begin, you can read our methodology.
